At the age of 10, Jean Grey witnessed her best friend, Annie Richardson, being hit by a speeding car. Annie died in Jean's arms, but as she did so Jean was flooded with Annie's feelings and pain. Depressed and traumatised by the incident, which was the result of her awakening telepathic abilities, Jean was sent to Professor Xavier for treatment. Shortly afterwards Xavier started to recruit the members of the first X-Men and Jean became the fifth member. For years the team fought together and over time Jean fell in love with Scott Summers "Cyclops".
Several years later Jean and the X-Men were kidnapped by a madman named Steven Lang and his Sentinals. They were taken aboard his space-station where they finally defeated him. However, they still had to return to Earth and with solar flares in fury, death seemed almost certain. Willing to sacrifice herself for the team and the man she loved, Jean took control of the returning space shuttle and tried to steer the craft home, all the while using her telekinetic powers to hold back the radiation. In the final moments the shield failed and the shuttle plumited to earth.
with the radiation eating her alive, jean called out with all of her telepathic powers, and came into contact with the phoenix force. The phoenix force saved the xmen, and made a deal with jean. Jean was dying, but the phoenix could heal her, over time. and in return, jean would show the phoenix life. The phoenix took a piece of jean's concouse being, and then put her body in a healing cukoon and placed it underneath the bay.
When the xmen surfaced, the phoenix surfaced in jean's place, and everyone thought her to be possesed by the phoenix force.
after fullfilling her destiny with the shiar and the mkrann crystal, the phoenix stayed, haveing a sample of what liveing was like, she lived only for sensation.
The hellfire club took advantage of this, the mix of the white queen's telepathy, and mastermind's illusion powers, they drove the phoenix into becomeing the dark phoenix.
the hellfire club tried to use jean to kill the xmen, but, durring a duel, in jean's mind, mastermind (as jason wayngard) killed Scott, believeing that that would make the phoenix completely his, but it woke her up, and she took it out on mastermind. scott was saved becuase of the telepathic rapport he shared with jean.
after they leave the hellfire club, jean vamps out, full fledged dark phoenix, and destroys the blackbird, and tries to kill the xmen herself, claiming that it's all about her sensations. scott and the professor knock her around, and jean's concousness takes over, and the phoenix runs.
In her hunger, the dark phoenix flew into space, and ate a sun, killing the entire dabari system. This alerted the Shiar to her ominus change to the dark, and they set back to earth.
jean comes through, and then the shiar show up and put her on trial for killing the dabari, the profession makes a challenge for jean's life, and the xmen end up going against the royal guard on the dark side of the moon. the xmen loose, and jean kills herself on the moon.
the phoenix force that is released when the body desintegrates goes around the earth, to return the part of jean that it took, and wake up her body once more, with the memories of phoenix killing the dabari in her name, jean rejects the tainted piece of herself, and it again goes around the world.
Sinister had created a clone of jean, and the piece of her concouness found that body, and animated madelyne pryor.
jean was thought dead for years, scott married madelyne, and she bore him a son, cable-nate-grey.
The cukoon containing jean's body is found by the avengers, and passed to the fantastic four, who open it, and find jean.
after alot of stuff i don't care to explain in detail, madelyne starts inferno, and durring her confrontation with jean, tries to take jean into death with her telepathically, but fails.
jeans ends up haveing to take the piece of herself that the phoenix tainted, and pieces of madelynn too.
jean eventually marries cyclops, and ends up takeing the name phoenix once more, since they changed technical things in the comicbook world, it seems jean is the phoenix, the phoenix is jean, and one is not complete without the other. (and madalyne is alive again too, awaken by the AOA nate grey)
Cyclops leaves jean for the white queen, and jean dies again, as the phoenix and herself, to save the world.
As it says on her gravestone, "She will rise again"
