Name: Sophie
Alias/Code Name: Spanner
Age: Its…Complicated, Depending on the order you view events, she can Be 13 at her youngest, that’s when she gained her spanning ability, though usually she’s 16 by the time she starts visiting our era of history.
Character Type: Mutant from the distant future
Gender: Female
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Appearance:
Personality: The universe is her oyster, or at least that how she views it. Sophie see’s herself as an explorer, traveling through time and space, skipping over the boring bits of history so that she can get to the “good bits”. Her unique perspective often makes her seem very odd to others, ditzy even. This is a mistake, as she’s far smarter than appearances would seem. Since she spans to different points in time frequently, what usually happens is that events end up taking place in a much different order for her. You could have a conversation with her, and she leaves in the middle, only to return an instant later. But in that instant, she might have spent six months in the past, or the new version of her to arrive might be a younger version of herself which hasn’t even heard the start of the conversation yet. While she is smart, she is far from mature, indeed, she’s egocentric, arrogant, reckless, impatient and a tad petty as well. Still, she’s an alright individual, friendly and outgoing. She has no interest in changing time to suit her own ends, and is fairly content to act more as an observer. Or she would be, if she didn’t have the constant terror of Foxhorn hunting her down. Knowing that her existence constitutes a threat to the utopia from which she was born, and that temporal hunters wait for one mistake on her part before they pounce and wipe her from history, she will do everything in her power to avoid that fate. To that end, she tries to gain the allegiance of anyone whom she feels might be strong enough to offer her protection. How much she cares about these allegiances is a matter of debate.
Likes: Saturdays, Apples, bananas, Exploring the unknown, museums, Quoting TV shows, Arguing a point, Dropping in on people unexpectedly, receiving attention
Dislikes: Foxhorn (terrified of it), Waiting, Sticking in one corner of space-time for too long, Sundays, Responsibility, Historical figures/events which don’t live up to her expectations, her appearance, taking things seriously
Strengths: Running Away, knowledgeable about historic and future events, Clever, excellent sense of time and direction, moderate understanding of the nature of time and space.
Weaknesses: Impatient, Egotistical, Radiation fields, cowardly, Immature, Irresponsible, Rambles a lot when trying to explain something,
Powers/Weapons:
Spanning: Sophie’s possesses the ability to move herself through time and space, as well as carrying an unspecified amount of additional mass with her when she does. This action, which she calls Spanning, allows her to disappear from one point in space-time, and reappear in another. By her own claims, she can reach anywhere and anywhen in the universe, though making especially long spans is both tiring and imprecise at best, so she often limits herself to hop scotching between points to reach a given destination. Additionally, she needs a fair grasp on where and when she wants to go to ensure her arrival is correct. Spanning to new locations is inexact at best and she usually misses by a reasonable margin. Her power prevents her from spanning into occupied space, automatically shifting her position to the nearest available location so that she doesn’t arrive inside another object. Though there is nothing to prevent her arrival location from being harmful or dangerous. Arriving inside a burning building or a cramped air duct is possible, and unpleasant.
Spanning itself is virtually effortless. She merely sets a destination in her mind, and then appears there. Her disappearing and arrival are both nearly silent, save for a faint ringing noise in the ears of anyone nearby. Bringing along additional mass only requires her to be in contact with it, though as mentioned before, this can quickly drain her stamina.
Given that she can place herself at any point in history, it is not unreasonable to raise the question as to how she can interact with events. Her power generates a localized ‘blur’ in causality. When she’s around, there can be mild shifts in events, details changed or edited. While the overall course of history remains unchanged, the exact nature of what took place can be manipulated in small ways. More so, given her fear of being hunted down, she is loath to interfere in any event which could signal her presence to Foxhorn.
Her power to move in 4-D space does have a few limitations not yet mentioned. Radiation is very disruptive to her abilities, the quantum decay of partials generates a torrent of micro paradoxes, either blocking off her abilities entirely, or greatly interfering with how they function, as well as being physically painful for her. Secondly, interaction with any of her past or future selves is a risky endeavor. Her power can blur history, but when two or more of her are present, the overlapping distortions generate temporal anomalies which rapidly grow to become catastrophically dangerous if not kept in check. As such, the only interaction she has with her younger and older selves must be kept to a bare minimum, and at a safe distance. There also is the risk of running interfearence when she encounters other spatial or temporal disruptions. Pocket dimensions, teleportation fields, black holes and the like can all disrupt her abilities causing her to ‘trip’ as she describes it, and stranding her in a given corner of space time for a while.
History: In the far distant future, mankind has risen. Through many trials and strife, through crisis and doom, but through it all, the superhuman protectors of earth succeeded. A utopian society was born, spreading out through the galaxy, colonizing and exploring the frontiers of space, built on the principles of peace and justice. Or at least, on the surface. While evil outright had been almost entirely abolished, there was still a threat to the golden age. Meddlers in time, disruptions in the flow of causality could undo all that was built, not simply destroying it, but making it such that it never exsisted to begin with. Foxhorn was born out of this need, a secret police force with the single task of tracking down and eliminating all temporal threats which might undo the glorious future.
Foxhorn became the boogiemen of the age, rumors and myth surrounding the name. Most believed they didn’t exist, they were just stories told to scare misbehaving children. Sophie never believed in them either, till she spanned through time. She was 13 when her mutant power manifested, her ability to shift herself through time and space. It was at once one of the greatest and most frightening moments of her life. To be free from the prison of the present and able to go anywhere, see anything. But before she knew what was happening, they were on her. Foxhorn. Like demons out of a bad dream, they appeared, shooting and shouting. They were fast and efficient, and she’d have been snuffed out had she not spanned away. Far away in fact, back to more than 65 million years before the birth of Christ.
That was three years ago, for her. Sophie has survived in that time by running, and never stopping. She spans through history, randomly flirting from one point to another, driven by her fear. Growing accustomed to making her way on her own. Still, it wasn’t all bad. The majesty o the universe was open to her, the wonders of the stars, past present and future, were all there waiting for her. She took up traveling, wandering through history, seeing the spectacles unfold. In her heart of hearts, she knew it was a risk. That spending time in locations of interest meant she might leave a trail that could be followed. But a life spent in fear isn’t a life worth living. Mistakes were made, sometimes she’d get to involved in events, and they’d come. Sometimes a few, sometimes more, Men and woman, machines and monsters, appearing through rifts in space time. She ran, each time. But each time reaffirmed that she was still being hunted.
Time passes, even for a time traveler. Enjoying bits and pieces of other peoples lives began to grow dull. Sure, she could see the most fantastic scenes in history, but without someone to stand there and see them with her, it felt dull and empty. She needed companionship. More than that though, she also needed a strong arm at her side. Each time Foxhorn found her, they appeared with greater strength and speed. They were closing in. Knowing, terrified in the truth that she was little good at fighting, and could only try and run, she came to decided she also needed protection. So she’s started searching. A mutual exchange, she can offer a gateway to all of time and space, and someone out there could offer her a means of survival, when her hunters came to strike.
