Name: Ashley Fennel II
Alias: Caress, Ms. Virgo
Age: 26
Character Type: Meta-human
Gender: Female
Alignment: ‘Legitimate Businesswoman’
Appearance:
Personality: Anyone who spends time in Ashley’s presence will find her pleasant, charming, speaking with clarity and sophistication, remaining pleasant and friendly, almost seeming inviting. Yet, there is always a sense that there is more going on then what is apparent. Still waters run deep after all. Perhaps its in her eyes, which always seem to be judging whatever they fall upon, passively grading and critiquing it. But, despite this unshakable sense of distance, most find her pleasant and agreeable. Ashley takes great care to maintain this appearance. She Speaks softly, calmly, her works without bite or harshness. It must be noted however, that her softness is only skin deep. She possess a keen mind, which she applies with surgical precision. When she speaks to you, its not so much a conversation as an exercise for her. She also is very critical, in everything she does. Flaws are explored in depth, rather than brushed over. Just because she restrains herself from speaking aloud of any disappointments or imperfections in others, she never fails to make note of them. They are to be avoided at all costs, and eliminated whenever possible. Her fixation on details serves her well, ensuring that little is left to chance. Even when her endeavors are successful, she is seldom satisfied. Lastly, she is untrusting to the extreme. She tolerates no subversions of her will, seeing even the tiniest signs of betrayal as outright declarations of war. She commands loyalty not through power or charisma, though she is short on neither. She does so because she eliminates any dissent within her ranks without pause and certainly without mercy.
Likes: A quiet, well organized work space, a good book, hygiene, honest and straight forward people, predictability, apples, springtime, flower arraignment.
Dislikes: Betrayal, Disloyalty, opening up emotionally, Imperfections, sloppy workers, synthetic materials, Fluorescent lighting, poor grammar.
Strengths: Perfectionist, Modest, Intelligent, Meticulous, Diligent, Practical, Patient, Charming, Methodical, Logical
Weaknesses: Overcritical, Harsh, Perfectionist, Vengeful, does not let go of a grudge, untrusting, occasionally slips into paranoia, unwilling to compromise, possessive, unforgiving.
Powers/Weapons:
Toxikinesis: Ashley’s Body possesses the capacity to manufacture an astounding range of chemicals within itself, and to do so in great volume, before expelling these chemical mixtures outwards. Though her bodily fluids. Typically this is done through her sweat, allowing her to project it outwards via her skin. Other times, she uses her saliva, either directly via spit, or by mixing it with her breath to expel clouds of the substance. But virtually any fluid in her body can serve as a conduit for her abilities, if the need arises. She has enough control over her ability that she can mitigate the chemicals she expels, though situations of physically or mental stress may cause some ‘slippage’ on her part.
In order for her to craft a specific substance, two requirements must be met. First, she needs to have been exposed to it at some point. The same biological systems which produce the chemicals in her body also produce countermeasures to protect her. After being exposed to a harmful substance, she automatically creates an agent to counteract it. Additionally, she acquires a chemical blueprint to the exposed substance, and after a few repeated exposures, will be able to manufacture it herself. The second requirement is that she must have the internal stores of raw materials to formulate the substance. To ensure her supplies are well maintained, she supplements her diet with a plethora of toxic substances, which give her the building blocks needed to keep her powers going.
Having sampled an astounding variety of poisons, toxins, venoms and acids, Ashley has a large inventory of substances she can draw on in combat. Defensively, she can coat her body in toxins which serve to dissuade anyone from making contact with her, or switching to acids to cause immediate harm. Offensively, her attacks bypass typical defensive measures, destroying the body’s systems and weakening them to the point where their biological functions can no longer continue to operate and collapse. Often, she layers many different kinds of toxins on her opponent, not only to cumulatively harm them, but to greatly increase the strain on their body and the difficulty in devising an antidote. A superhumanly powerful immune system may be able to cope with one poison, or ten, or even several dozen, but will eventually break down as it is forced to deal with an ever increasing number of Chemical compounds. In this way, she fights a battle of attrition, wearing the opposition down rather than destroying them outright.
Beyond toxins, she does possess several acids, though they are not as potent as her poisons, due to the requirement of exposing herself to them before gaining the ability to manufacture them internally. The most potent acids would cause her severe, possibly permanent harm in the time frame between exposure and developing a counter agent.
Ashley can consciously shape the substances expelled from her body, sculpting them into basic geometric forms, projecting them as bullet like droplets, and similar feats, though she cannot manage any high degree of detail, nor is this control especially powerful. She requires physical contact with the substance in order to shape it and once that contact is broken, it is out of her control.
Lastly, since her power is just as dangerous to her allies as it is to others, she must work diligently to avoid friendly fire, though given her disposition, allies should take care to avoid being seen as ‘acceptable losses’ in any given conflict.
Chemical adaptation: As mentioned previously, Ashley automatically creates antidotes and counteragents to any chemical to which she is exposed. Depending both on how aggressive the agent is, and how complex the formula for the substance to counteract it is, the time between initial exposure and immunity varies between a few seconds and several minutes. After having adapted to a given substance, she is essentially immune to it, so long as her body can continue to produce its counteragent.
History: The Fennel crime family technically began during the rise of organized crime that was sparked by American prohibition. The families founder initially worked as a hired gun for the 5 families, after the aggressive efforts of the U.S. law enforcement, splintered off with several associates to pursue their own agenda. While not especially powerful, the group did manage to survive, and continued to expand its operations over the next 80 years, with leadership of the group transferring from its founder, Nicholas Fennel Sr. to his son, Nicholas Fennel Jr., who’s leadership would continue to strengthen the families power base. Fennel Jr. came to marry, and produce three children, Ashley being the middle child, with two brothers as her siblings. Her brother, Nicholas Fennel III, was 9 years her senior, and was something of a project for her father, whom wished to pass on the throne to his eldest child. Nick III was clever, but not especially well spoken, and had a generally rude nature about him, and far to proud of himself. While his father’s favorite, he was disliked by many of the men closest to Ashley’s Father, men who played important roles in maintaining the stability and security of the family. Ashley herself was the favorite, by far. Intelligent, meticulous, diligent, all fine qualities for one who had to direct the movements of an entire organization. Perhaps best of all, she was humble about her talents. Whether this made her a more enjoyable conversationalist than her elder brother, or helped stoke the ego’s of the men around her by downplaying her own importance, the net result was that many felt she’d be a far more sensible choice for a leader, though none would ever voice their dissenting opinion with her father.
Her youngest brother, Thomas, was unfortunately born crippled, having malformed bone marrow through most of his body, leaving him dependent on intravenous medication and confined to a wheelchair. Despite being two years younger than his sister, Thomas was unquestionably her superior in terms of intellect. Had he been stronger, he would have been uncontested as the best choice. As it was, his frail body failed to command the respect needed to guide a group built entirely of hardened criminals. Thomas didn’t mind, he had no interest in leadership anyway, preferring instead to spend his time painting. Ashley herself was of a similar opinion, happy to let her brother take command of the family, instead directing herself into academics, where she worked in pharmaceuticals. While never explicitly sitting it as her motivation for working in such a field, most suspected she wished to find a way to cure her ailing brother.
While Ashley was mid way through her junior year at medical school, she was one day approached by her elder brother, whom sought her help. Their fathers 60th birthday was approaching, and it was likely that he would step down shortly, given that his age was beginning to catch up with him. In light of this, Nick wished to ensure that his gift was truly something magnificent, but was unable to figure what he should offer. Ashley herself had already acquired a gift, a beautiful hand-woven silken robe, one fit for even the most majestic kings or sheiks. Her studies prevented her from attending the celebration in person, and she had intended to present the gift once she returned home. But, not wanting to turn her brother away, she handed the robe over to him, allowing her brother to offer it in her place.
When the day arrived, Nick handed the robe over to his father, who was pleased at having received such an elegant piece of craftsmanship. Wearing it through the party, and several hours into the evening, was struck with violent fits of agony, his skin turning red and blistered. Nick suffered a similar fate across his hands. Medical help did little to aid their father, who’s body gave out the next day. Nick was the center of blame, but was quick to point out that it was his sister whom had given him the robe in the first place. It seemed clear what had happened. Eager to see her brother out of the way, and already a favorite, Ashley had given a poisoned gift to her brother so that he’d be blamed for their father’s death. With both the current Head, and the heir, out of the picture, As the beloved daughter, she’d have a clear stage to move forward and assume command.
Ashley knew none of this till it was too late for her to escape. They came for her at night while she was working at her schools lab. Treachery was not to be accepted, not from anyone. She was bound and gagged, the lab set fire to. By all accounts, she should have died. Yet, as the swath of chemicals burned around her, the air filling with dozens of toxic agents, filling her every breath with toxic vapors. Working her way to a beaker of acidic compounds, Ashley forgoes pain in favor of survival, knocking the contents onto herself and her restraints. Though it burned for a moment, the pain subsided quickly. Not only did her ropes begin to burn away, but other restraints, ones that handed been splashed also started to dissolve, along with her clothing. Everything she touched burned. Free from her bonds, Ashley escaped the fire, yet still a green vapor seemed to pour off her skin. Whatever had taken place within her, had turned her into a living chemical weapon.
On her own, Ashley had to be careful to keep herself hidden from her family, allowing them to believe she was dead. Given his distance from the criminal empire, Ashley went to her brother Thomas for support. Her brother listened to Ashley’s story, and fond himself believing her tale. He noted that Ashley was too smart to try such a flawed attack, and that indeed, if she had wanted to take over, she had easier means to do so than framing their brother. Indeed, this seemed more like the strategy of their elder brother. Eager to take over, yet afraid he’d be overthrown by popular majority, he elected to eliminate both his father and his chief competition in one swoop. Indeed, Nick had taken over in the wake of the murder of their father.
Her new power interested Thomas though, who worked with her to understand it, hoping to forge it into a weapon with which to strike down their treacherous sibling. Over a period of months, Ashley learned the extend of her abilities, her power growing as she expended the Repertoire of chemicals in her arsenal. Nick’s empire was crumbling meanwhile, between those who still felt he was the real killer, and those who simply wanted him out of power. Infighting was increasingly common, and the power of the Fennel crime family was waning. They needed leadership to unite them. Ashley’s return, along with her new abilities, would all but assure that she could seize the mantle of leadership.
Striking out, she broke into her own home, confronting her elder brother face to face; Ashley easily overwhelmed her sibling, demanding answers, why he’d done it. He pleads ignorance, which he had no idea what she was talking about. Though she thought for certain that he was lying, his words didn’t sound like those of a man whose crimes had been brought to light. A gunshot broke out in their midst, Ashley went down, her side bleeding. And there in the doorway, was Thomas.
Thomas, whose intellect, was only matched by his frailty. Thomas, who had never been considered as a potential head of the family, despite his gifts. Thomas, who had never shown an interest in organized crime. Thomas, who had sat back and pitted his family against itself,. Thomas, who had in one move, killed their father and framed his brother and sister. Thomas, who had a gun in his hand, and a smile on his face. Ashley saw it then, the anger and hates her brother held for them both. He was going to kill them both, blaming Nick’s death on Ashley, and then, with the family already on the verge of war with itself, he would step in as the only mind with the intellect needed to guide them back to power.
Thomas moved, his gun trained on his sister. But Thomas was slow, his frailty leaving his body feeble and limp. Nick was faster, stepping in the path of the bullets, taking the shots. Thomas emptied the entire magazine before his brother went down, dead before he hit the ground. And as he fell, Thomas saw a fury in his sister which he hadn’t believed possible. Ashley took her time, walking across the chamber, as her younger sibling trembled, trying to reload his weapon. He was weak and frail, and didn’t stand a chance.
Ashley pulled the IV tubes from the bags of medication which had kept Thomas alive over these many years. The tubes which went directly to his major arteries. Her toxins flowed into them, flooding through Thomas’s system. He burned, first inside, then out, the skin melting off his body. He screamed, far longer than Ashley would have thought possible, he sat there and screamed in agony. She stood there, pouring every drop of malice and hate she could possible muster into him, till her power ran dry, and the only thing left was a mass of bone and tissue fused to the seat.
In the wake of the deaths of her two brothers, Ashley confronted the top members of the family, and issued an ultimatum. Join with her now, or leave. Opposition and treachery would not be tolerated. About half of the group agreed to stand beside her, the rest still convinced she’d Killed Nicholas Fennel II, in addition to her brothers, or simply wanting a chance to seize control for them. The Fennel crime family fought within itself, but after six months, the battles came to a conclusion. Much of their strength was gone, squandered within their internal battles. But Ashley sat at the head of the organization, prepared to lead the group back from the brink.
Seven years have passed since then, and the Fennel crime group is once again back to its height in power, still growing. Directing the organization through a mix of meticulous attention to details, and straight old fashion fear, Ashley has a firm grip on her power, and has ensured that no one would be foolish enough to try and take it from her.
