The Witchblade: An ancient artifact, one of a set of thirteen which shape the fate of the universe, The Witchblade is the offspring of two of the other artifacts. Born from The Darkness, which encompasses the forces of the dark and of chaos, and The Angelus, which embodied light and order, the Witchblade became a balancing force between the two, as The Darkness and The Angelus are eternally warring with one another. Appearing as an ornate right handed gauntlet, the Witchblade itself is both partially organic in nature and sentient. To function, it must first locate a suitable host and bond with them. The Witchblade itself is masculine, and so requires its host to be female in order to preserve balance, though there have been instances when it temporarily affixed itself to men. The Witchblade takes care that its hosts are worthy of wielding it. What it defines to be worthy is not entirely clear, though it typically includes a strong character and determination, as well as the capacity to use The Witchblade to its full potential. An unworthy individual who attempts to don The Witchblade is punished by having their arm removed. Indeed, if a worthy wielder later becomes unworthy, The Witchblade may not only choose to leave them, but sever the arm as well.
When a worthy host is found, The Witchblade attaches itself to the individual. The Bond goes well beyond the cellular level, and indeed The Witchblade connects itself directly to the soul of its wielder. After doing this, the Witchblade becomes incredibly difficult for anyone but the host to remove, and even then, The Witchblade can resist the host’s efforts if it chooses. After bonding, the Host gains the full benefits of the Witchblades’ power, though they are not immediately aware of exactly what powers the Witchblade has.
Firstly, The Witchblade can communicate with its Host mentally. It’s usually only communicates in commands or one word statements, remaining silent the rest of the time. It possesses a range of senses and is aware of its surroundings, usually to a degree surpassing that of its host. This can allow it to provide warning to its wielder of unseen dangers. In some cases, it may forgo any instruction and act of its own violation to attack a perceived threat. The Host can attempt to suppress this by concentrating their will, but it is not an easy task. Secondly, as a result of the cellular bond, The Witchblade greatly increases the rate at which its host can recover from wounds. Injuries that would normally last days or even weeks can have their recovery time reduced to hours, greatly vitalizing the host’s constitution and slowing the ageing process. It also improves the senses of the host somewhat, especially vision, as well as vision in the infrared spectrum.
Beyond its Passive abilities, The Witchblade can be proactively used. When it senses a Danger to its host, it extends to create armor around the body. The armor sometimes can form over clothing, but typically shreds right through it. The amount of armor formed often relates to the level of danger present. A normal human might provoke only the bare minimum, forming an armor bikini of sorts, while a more potent enemy brings a greater protection and covering. The armor can extend to protect vulnerable areas and deflect attacks, reacting with enough speed to stop a bullet fired from close range before impact. It also has shown itself to be capable of forming wings and allowing its Host to fly. On other occasions, it has shown itself able to make shields or barriers, as the situation demands.
Offensively, the Witchblade can form a wide range of weapons. At its most basic, it can extend blades from the fingers, which are both sharp and strong. Other weapons formed include whip like tendrils, swords, fire small darts and presumably other shapes that have yet to be seen. The Witchblade also possesses mystical powers, allowing it to fire powerful beams of energy, typically employed from the Witchblade itself. It can form these same energies into a sword, or project them from an object, as shown when it fired its energy from a handgun held by the wielder. While the Witchblade itself doesn’t seem to enhance the strength of its wielder, per say, the constructions that it creates seem to be much stronger and if the hosts directs them, can be used to achieve physical feats beyond that of a normal human.
Lastly, the Witchblade has other abilities which it has been confirmed to possess, and possibly many others which have yet to be seen. It can pick locks, and indeed is exceptionally good at this. It can heal wounds, even ones that would normally be fatal. Even if the target is dead, it can re-animate the bodies, allowing the deceased to communicate with the living, though the body itself remains dead. If it chooses, it can show its Host the lives and experiences of previous wielders, these visions manifesting as dreams. Empathetically, it can show its host scenes of great trauma. On a few instances, it has shown that it can interact with incorporeal beings, slay extra dimensional forces and even bring death to deities. It has shown itself able to manipulate the elements, though exactly what extent it can do this to remains unclear.
In rare instances, the Witchblade can choose to split itself between multiple hosts, giving the Angelus and Darkness aspects of itself to two people. Doing so can disrupt the balance between the Host and the Witchblade, with each host experiencing changes in their personality which reflect the natures of the component that they currently hold. Eventually, each wielder will be driven to acquire the other half and restore balance.
When not in use, or upon the hosts request, the Witchblade can appear as a heavily ornate bracelet, allowing it to appear inconspicuous. It does so of its own violation, and will usually remain as a gauntlet. Most of the time, The Witchblade is content to lend its powers to whatever cause it’s wielder chooses to devote themselves, and agrees to work according to their will. It has shown to become discontent if it feels that it is not being used properly, often seeming agitated or perhaps simply board if it goes unused for an extended length of time. While it does not usually change the personality of the wielder, when the goals and desires of The Witchblade match those of the host, the sensations and emotions of the Host often are heightened as a result. This is most readily apparent during combat.
Abilities:
Medical training: Alexis is a trained paramedic, and is able to treat a host of potentially life threatening injuries. She is well versed in dealing with trauma and medication, though she is not as qualified as a full time M.D. would be.
History: Alexis’s childhood was very much a gilded one. To the outside, it was a wonderful suburban lifestyle. Two story bedroom home, white picket fence, mother and father and her as their beloved daughter. She went to school, played with other little girls from her neighborhood. It was almost like something out of an old 50’s sit com. Behind the closed doors and drawn curtains, things we’re less than perfect. Her mother had been caught in an affair years before, and the shadow of the betrayel had hung over the household. While she had always insisted that her husband was Alexis’s father, doubts still lingered. The relationship between the two was strained at best, outright hostile at worst, with Alexis caught somewhere in the middle. This, certainly, was a less than ideal condition to grow up in. She learned early that it was best to stay out of the way whenever fights broke out, something that was all to frequent an occurrence. So, it wasn’t perfect, but it wasn’t horrible either. Her father made decent money at least, enough to support them without much difficulty, which was pretty nice.
When Alexis was twelve, things started falling apart. Her father was fired from his work and needed to find new employment. What work he could find was at a much lower pay rate, and the strain on the family unity grew. Money was tight, and the fighting in her home only got worse, with arguments erupting with virtually no provocation, and Alexis began finding it harder and harder to avoid the crossfire. Accusations we’re tossed about, that her father wasn’t really her father. But the final straw was when Alexis mother was accused of a second affair. Whether or not this was true didn’t matter, it broke the family apart. Lacking the money to leave, Alexis and her mother we’re only able to knuckle under and try to get by. Her father began to assault Alexis when in the throws of especially strong rage, using her as a vent for his emotions, attacking her both verbally and physically.
When she turned fifteen, Alexis decided that it was time to put and end to this. She wasn’t happy with her life, and didn’t want to stick around for it any further. With parents either incapable or unwilling to take care of her, the only remaining choice that she could see was to take care of herself. Gathering up the possessions she could and taking all the money she could scrounge for herself, Alexis departed one summer night and never looked back. It wasn’t what she wanted, to live on the streets, but anywhere was preferable to staying at home.
For the next year and a half of her life, Alexis lived on the streets, scrounging for her survival. It was hard, cold, and a life changing experience. It hardened her spirit, made her tough and strong emotionally. She found a sort of fire inside her, a push to stand on her own feet. Tempered by the hardship of survival on a day to day basis, she learned to rely on herself. But not every change that took place was for the best. Getting by with nothing meant making choices, few of which we’re easy. She made some money working in drug trafficking heroin for a few dealers. She also, in a choice she’d come to regret much later, started sampling her product. The experience was great, a sort of gateway out of the real world for a time where she could find some peace. A few more experiments and she began to crave it.
Alexis was eventually caught, surprisingly not by the police but by child welfare, who we’re eager to get her back to her parents. When it became quite clear that Alexis had no desire to go back, and indeed, that her parents we’re quite incapable of caring for her while fighting amongst themselves, a legal hearing broke out to try and settle the matter. During the time, Alexis was kept in foster care. While he education was lacking from the time spent away from school, she was given a strong push towards catching up. She worked hard, and managed to make up somewhat for her time away from school. She’d never had anything against education, after all, and indeed had wanted to grow up to be a doctor when she was younger. The court case ended up turning into a drawn out string of hearings and proceedings, which seemed to go on without end. Fortunately, time ended up being on Alexis’s side, when she passed the mark of her 18th birthday and was now an adult.
On suggestion from her former foster care, Alexis applied for a scholarship to attend college. Unfortunately, she didn’t have what it took to get a full pass, instead receiving enough funds to attend a two year school. Unable to go for becoming Doctor Alexis Szabo, she was willing to go for Paramedic Szabo, which required far less training than a full medical degree, and was a goal within her reach. Attending a community college, with additional classes taken through the local hospital, Alexis began her higher education. She also made the push to end her use of Heroin, and met with some success. Though she couldn’t seem to break the desires completely, she did manage to greatly cut back on her use, and largely suppress her desire for it. Like many things in her life, it was less than perfect, but good enough to get by.
Graduating, and finding employment as a proper Paramedic, Alexis used her new paycheck to get a smallish apartment within the city, finally feeling like she really was standing on her own feet. Over the next 4 years, she continued to work, proving time and again that she was a competent and talented medic. It felt good, knowing that every day when she went to work, she’d be saving lives. Yes, there was lots of people she couldn’t save, and yes, it was a toll that hit hard every time. But she made herself look at the bright side, having learned long ago just how dangerous it can be to let the harshness of the real world weigh you down.
