Name: Mary Grayson Gordon
Alias: The Blue Beetle
Age: 18
Height/Weight: 5'4"/110
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Black
Persuasion:: Good
History:
Mary Gordon is the Blue Beetle of a world in which Dick Grayson became Batman after the supervillian Bane broke the back of Bruce Wayne.
She was conceived not long before her father chose to take on the mantle, it was in fact the very night Barbara Gordon convinced him to do so that the magic happened.
Unfortunately, Dick decided that becoming Batman was going to make it impossible to have a family life, so he chose not to marry Barbara, so Mary rarely saw her father until she turned eight. Dick seemed to regret his earlier decision and chose to spend more time with Barbara and their daughter. He decided at this point to train the girl, expecting her to eventually become his Robin and even perhaps someday take over the mantle of the Bat.
The Batman found an apt pupil: she was intelligent and quickly grew strong and fast under his physical regimen. She also took to the education he gave her - science, math, history, medicine, and later engineering and other advanced studies. Her mind seemed more suited to sythesizing data and making intuitive leaps rather than a strict chain of cold logic, but this helped her be an excellent detective in her own way.
All of this changed abruptly when Mary turned twelve. A woman appeared, actually the infamous Lady Shiva, who brought to Dick Grayson another girl, this one eight years old. Tests proved what Lady Shiva claimed... that the young Cassandra was in fact his daughter too. Unwilling to abandon this child, Dick installed her in Wayne Manor and began to train Cassandra as he had Mary.
The elder girl told her father frankly that she felt like this was a trap, or at least a way to make him vulnerable, but he would hear nothing of it. He promised her that Cassandra would grow up right now that she was away from Lady Shiva and her assassins. After that, Mary used every excuse to spend time with her mother and her team, the Birds of Prey. That proved to be an important change in her life as well.
Working with Barbara's team was the Blue Beetle, Ted Kord. He had decided to slow down a bit in his crime-fighting, choosing to perform more of a support role for the team rather than an active one. He took the opportunity to work with Mary at this point, helping her continue to train physically and working with her on even more advanced science and engineering... things her father did not really have the knowledge to teach her.
Things continued this way for several more years until Mary was sixteen (and Cassandra twelve). On Mary's birthday, Cassandra announced that she would become not Robin, but instead she would become Batgirl... and there were no words of denial from the Batman. That was the final straw for Mary, who angrily confronted her father and told him in no uncertain terms that he could keep his cowl. She would find her own way in the world, without him.
She threw herself whole-heartedy into Ted's training then, impressing him so much that when he learned around this time that he had a heart condiction that would make it very dangerous to continue his career as a super-hero, he offered her the chance to take on his legacy. She agreed and joined the Birds of Prey as the Blue Beetle.
Powers:
Mary is quite brilliant, surpassing even her mentor Ted Kord's intellect. She does not have the wealth of experience or training he did, so she tends to have to rely on leaps of intution when working on a difficult problem. She has quite a wealth of physical training in acrobatics and martial arts thanks to her father's early regimen.
As the Blue Beetle, she utilizes Ted Kord's technology and has made a few improvements of her own. She also had access to the Waynetech portfolio of technology and the files Bruce Wayne had on his own inventions and any number of alien technologies he had recovered and studied.
These gadgets include:
Baby Bugs - small anti-grav drones used for surveillance
BB gun - a solar-powered pistol capable of firing a disabling strobe of light or a blast of compressed air that could knock down several men. The gun's safety measures are keyed ot the suit's gloves, and so cannot be picked up and used by anyone else.
- a wrist-mounted grapple/zip-line with several charges
- a protective suit with strobe-resistant goggles that protects against contact agents, impacts, glancing blade strikes, radiation, shrapnel, and is bullet-resistant (as a suit of kevlar body armor). The suit is also temperature-controlled and is heat and cold-resistant. The suit has full communication gear, and the goggles can use night-vision, infrared, and thermographic filters/electronic enhancement. The suit can be sealed for vaccuum, underwater operations, or gas attacks. Eddie can also remotely control her drones or the Bug airship through the suit. Eddie has mounted a pair of anti-gravity pods to the back of her modified suit complete with compressed-air engines allowing her to fly for about an hour at a time or hover almost indefinitely.. This is mostly an emergency measure for accidently falling off buildings or if a need arises to get somewhere higher that her grapple launcher can't be used. It it not intended as a transporation device, and her movement is relatively slow, perhaps 30 miles per hour. The suits cowl cannot be unlatched without conscious effort on her part, so she cannot be easiily unmasked. The suits gloves have a buffered computer interface, allowing her to crack security systems and computers without having to worry about viruses or other countermeasures. The suit is insulated against electric shock, as well. It has about an hour of full life support, and has a small water resevoir and concentrated energy paste.
- a utility belt with a number of gadgets, including a magnetic lockpick widget that also has an acid spray only useful to open locks in case the mechanism cannot be manipulated and a series of tiny but potent gas capsules with various effects (sleep gas, blackout gas, irritant gas, metal and glass eating acid, and a few others).
- a gas-powered wrist launcher that also fires the same tiny spheres she keeps in her utility belt, including the blackout gas (similar to the gas used by Dr. Mid-Nite... it absorbs all infrared and ultraviolet light, usually she uses this to cover retreats or quick assaults).
-The Bug is a solar-powered anti-gravity bases airship that has a mobile lab, stun blasters, magnetic manupulators, defensive shields, and manipulator claws. It has an emergency medical lab and stasis chamber in case of critical wounds. This version can fly at supersonic speeds, and even reach orbit, but Eddie does not feel confident enough to pilot the ship that fast or that high herself, and the automatic pilot will not go beyond the speed of sound unless in an emergency.
