Appearance: Being a member of the secret service, Calvin regularly wears a black suit, white collar shirt, black tie, and black shades. His blonde hair is kept short at all times.
Name: Calvin Rankin
Alias or Code-name: Mimic
Powers/Weapons: Calvin has the ability to copy the powers and skills of anyone he comes in contact with. He can retain the skills for long periods of time, and is able switched out one power for another at anytime. The number of powers he can copy is only 5, as it is the maximum amount that his body can handle. Which means, in order to gain a new ability, he must first drop an ability to make room. Though he can possess 5 different powers at one time, the strength of each power is only half of the person’s ability he is copying.
Being a member of the secret service, he has trained in the use of armed and unarmed combat. Though he can use a firearm, he prefers to use his fist and powers to do his job.
History: Calvin Rankin was born in Passaic, New Jersey, where his father Prof. Ronald Ranker, examined his unique mutant abilities in secret. Because of the ‘mutant fear’ that ran rampant through out the country, he feared the other people in town would find out about his son, so he hide his son in an abandoned mine. But when the mine collapsed, Calvin survived and his father didn’t.
He became a drifter and eventually came to New York, where in a chance encounter with the hero Daredevil, he discovered he could copy the powers of other superheroes. He used this talent to survive on the streets until he was arrested for theft. He was about to be thrown in jail when a woman named Ororo Munroe came to take him into her custody. He was taken to the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, where he was given formal training for his abilities. During his time there, he butted heads with their team leader Cyclops and was a frequent drinking buddy of Wolverine.
Along with his fellow X-Men, Calvin fought for mutant civil rights against anti-mutant groups and evil mutant terrorists. For a time it seemed like a losing battle, until an incident where the mutant terrorist Magneto had surrendered over to the United Nations to answer for his crimes, but was short and killed with a plastic gun by a member of the Friends of Humanity. Magneto’s long time friend Prof. Charles Xavier, already under great mental and psychological strain at the time, used this incident to sway the minds of people in America to accept mutants.
Calvin supported Xavier in his more aggressive cause to see his dream fulfilled, while some of his fellow X-Men saw it as a violation of human rights. Feelings that Xavier quickly erased from their minds. With his psychic powers, Xavier was elected President of the United States, where he declared that America would be a save haven for mutants. Seeing this as a threat to normal humans, members of the United Nations declared war on America. With the help of the X-Men, America’s military forces were formed with mutant soldiers at the front lines of the war.
While the fight took place outside the U.S., a special task force called Service X was formed to protect the President and other key members of the government. Calvin joined the task force and was then given special training, after which he was assigned to protect Congresswoman Pride.
The war was fierce but ended quickly, causing other countries to reevaluate their stands on the mutant issue. Though the war was over, however, there were still pockets of resistance that didn’t agree with the Mutant Majority. One resistance group, which included notorious outlaws like John Walker and Bentley Wittman, attacked Congresswoman Pride at the Illinois capital building. The fight was short as Mimic immediately dispatched the group before they could hurt the Congresswoman. The fight turned deadly when stray gunfire hit a bystander, who then changed into a giant green monster and attacked everything insight. The ensuing battle ravaged Chicago and trampled all that stood in it path until it was finally put down by members of a government psy-op team, led by Danielle Moonstar.
When Congresswoman Pride was found dead in her home, Calvin was accused for the murder as his prints and DNA was found at the scene. Alleged rumors began to circulate that he and Pride were having an afire. During a prison transfer, his ride was attacked by a strange group of people. They offered him freedom if he joined them. They were the Exiles.
