Name: Janet Lamb
Alias/Code Name: Silhouette
Age: 16
Character Type: Meta-Human
Gender: Female
Alignment: Good
Appearance:
Personality: Janet is mature for her age. She takes herself seriously, perhaps a tad to seriously, preferring the cautious and thoughtful approach. She’s very caring about others, especially her family, and does everything in her power to protect them from harm. She’s afraid of her new power, but worse, she suffers from a sense of separation that she cant escape. Another challenge is finding acceptance within her own family. Her Father’s anger towards meta human’s isn’t so great that he’s turned on his eldest child, but he is at turmoil with his feelings. Janet knows this, and because of that, she knows that some part of him resents what she’s become. She herself has some feelings of anger towards super beings, including herself. The self hate that dwells within her can turn to poison in her thoughts, bringing anger or sorrow when provoked. She is a child who has lost her sense of identity, and needs to build a new one.
Likes: Family, Old Movies, The Beatles, Sunny Weather, service men and women, art.
Dislikes: Herself, super beings, Knives, winter, being alone, people who are afraid of her.
Strengths: Extremely stealthy, difficult to read, difficult to harm with normal methods, able to assume a wide range of forms.
Weaknesses: difficulty interacting with other beings, normally forced to a two dimensional state, strongly dependent on the presence of light.
Powers/Weapons:
Shadow Form: Janet no longer possesses a physical body, but instead exists as a shadow. This results in her being vastly different from normal beings, granting her a wide range of abilities not possessed by humans, but also leaving her with many new difficulties and vulnerabilities.
In a relaxed state, Silhouette’s body exists in a state where it is identical to a normal shadow. It is a two dimensional projection of darkness upon a surface. Her appearance is that of her own silhouette. In such a state, she is immaterial and difficult to harm in any conventional manner. She can interact with normal beings by touching their shadows. Actions taken upon the shadow of a being produce an identical response upon the source of that shadow. Her effective strength in moving objects in this manner is the same as a normal person of her height and build. However, shadows are typically less durable than their material counterparts, allowing her to somewhat bypass the toughness of otherwise resilient materials. Being touched like this is an interesting experience, with the exact sensation varying depending on the intent behind it. When not interacting aggressively, her touch feels similar to being touched by a normal being. Conversely, when she acts with hostile intent, the feeling is cold and unpleasant.
Janet is capable, with effort, of changing her shape greatly. So long as there is sufficient light, she can stretch her body, covering great distances. She can also alter her appearance, allowing her to appear as a different shadow. With time and practice, she will be able to assume the shape of essentially anything she desires, though always appearing as a shadow, and retaining the same abilities regardless of form, with a few exceptions. Forming blades allows her to cut or stab, rather than just bludgeon, and similar feats dependent only on the shape of form.
Though restricted in this state to moving along surfaces, she can freely move in any direction she pleases. Moving along walls or ceilings is no more challenging than walking along the ground. She doesn’t move any faster than a normal person could, but because she can bypass obstructions, it can seem she is much faster.
Perception wise, Janet experiences the world in a unique manner. She see’s the entire world in an inverted manner. Colors are reversed, areas of darkness appear as light, and vice versa, this extends to her own body, which she sees as glowing vibrantly with pure white light. While strange, it offers her no real disadvantage. Her sense of hearing is somewhat distorted, but not to an unmanageable degree. All sounds are somewhat muted, as if far away, and with a slight echo. She has no sense of smell or taste. Her sense of touch works normally, but only when contacting shadows, through which she can feel the same sensations as if she were touching the object generating the shadow. Other people Perceive Janet in a limited extent. Lacking a physical form, she projects no heat, leaves no trail nor scent. She makes no sound, except for when she intentionally speaks. Even then, her voice sounds similar to how she hears the world; it is always muted and distant. Lastly, as stated, she always appears as a silhouette, and as such, the only details that can be seen are her outline. Lacking any real depth of facial features makes her difficult, if not impossible to read. The combined effect, her voice, the immaterial way she moves, and the inability to read her, make Janet seem unnatural, even frightening.
Janet, being a shadow, is greatly influenced by the presence of light or darkness. Soft light, like natural sunlight, light bulbs or candles, provides her sustenance. She dosnt require food or water, though she still must rest. She receives all the nourishment she needs simply by being in the presence of light. While in direct light, her body appears more solid, her outline is much sharper. Her ability to alter her shape is greatly enhanced, as is her ability to materialize (see below.) On the opposite end, darkness provides her with cover, since there are plenty of places to hide. However, darkness weakens her somewhat. She finds it harder to change shape, and her appearance is more ethereal. The darkness of her body is faded and shallow, her outline becomes blurred.
In terms of injuries, Silhouette is difficult to harm, but easily to injure when the right method is employed. While soft light sources are beneficial, light can also harm her. Powerful light, such as that from a searchlight or laser beam, can cut through her body, tearing apart the shadow of her form. Thankfully, her ability to recover is also tied to light. When in bright light, she can heal from injuries in minutes, or hours for truly devastating damage. The inverse is her greatest weakness. In darkness, total darkness, she loses all power. To her, it is similar to drowning. She quickly succumbs to the darkness with envelopes her, losing consciousness, her body becoming a shapeless mass of darkness. If left like this for too long, she’ll eventually die from starvation, denied the light she needs to survive.
Materialization: With a great deal of practice, Janet can escape her two dimensional shape, and materialize as a fully formed being. While she still appears totally black, she gains physical presence to a degree. In this state, she can still shape change and stretch, only now she can directly affect other beings. Her power is still tied to light, and maintain this state is easiest when in bright lights such as that from the sun. Physical attacks can touch her, but have difficulty doing any real damage. Furthermore, she can reverse the effect, bringing physical beings to her world and making them into shadows. Doing so is straining, and far from pleasant. Unlike Janet, other beings become sensory dead upon transforming. They can sense nothing, except for Janet, whom they see as the brilliant white light she appears as. The shadow world lacks any air, and so any living thing that she brings there must keep its visit short.
History: Janet was born into a small, suburban family. Her father was a member of the United States Army, her mother a veterinarian. Both parents loved their daughter very much; indeed, the group was a happy family. Sure, like any family, they had their own issues. Money was never plentiful, but they always had enough to get by comfortably, so long as they we’re thrifty in their spending. She was an only child until she was 6, when her younger brother Michael came into the family household. It was a wonderful time, and remained that way for two years.
When Janet was 8 years old, the family was torn asunder. The family was caught in the middle of a superhuman brawl between villains and heroes. In the wake of the destruction, everything that Janet had known was gone. Her father had been called into service, and was left paralyzed from the waist down after taking a blow to his back. That was far from the worst. Janet’s mother had been caught in a collapsing building, and was taken from them. In a single day, everything was gone. The funeral was held, and the mourning began. Her father, unable to serve, elected to end his service, and was discharged with honors. He found a job as an accountant at the city museum. The adjustment was hard. Janet was only 8 years old, but she had to learn quickly how to pull her weight around the house, taking care of Michael, cooking, cleaning, and helping her father with his physical therapy. She had to grow up. She wasn’t the only one who was changing. Her father had never been a supporter of vigilantes, but he’d always respected them. After the events that robbed him of his legs and his wife, he no longer held that respect, finding them to be as dangerous as the villains they fought. His bitterness only grew stronger over the years.
When Janet was 16, her life took another sharp turn. While visiting the museum where her father now worked, she was inadvertently caught in the middle of a heist. Taken as a hostage, Janet thought she was doomed. Her spirits we’re lifted somewhat by the timely arrival of a few members of the Teen Titans. However, this quickly escalated the situation, and the criminal who had captured Janet took to grabbing knife he grabbed from one of the displays and pressing it against Janet’s throat, trying to force the hero’s to submit. The blade was old, made of obsidian, its origins unclear. When he cut her neck in a panic, Some fell power was released. Janet was infused with darkness; it flowed into her till she was filled to bursting. Her body erupted into ash, leaving nothing behind of her.
Nothing except her shadow. Her consciousness had passed into it, granting her a new life and new form. She didn’t know what to make of this sudden transformation, only that she was no longer human.
