Kagome sighed as she neared the well. She had left Inu Yasha back at the hut, and everyone else was still asleep. She had wanted to go early, while it was still dark. Usually she wouldn't have, but for some reason, this trip home seemed different to her. IN her gut, she had a bad feeling. So, instead of waking everyone up she stood in front of the well and looked down into it. She could remember, a long time ago, the demon that had come out of it, and she shuddered.
That had been when she had first met Inu Yasha. It seemed so long ago, but she remembered it clearly, especially when she looked down into the darkness of the well. She wondered how many other demons had been down there, over the centuries, lost for ages, maybe forever. Could there be others locked down there, in the time between now, and what she considered the modern time. Her time. She would probably never know, and it was probably best not to think about it right before she jumped in.
Throwing her legs over the edge of the well,s he sat on it for a moment, her legs dangling, and she could feel the cool air that always tickled her bare legs when she was about to jump. She shuddered again, then pushed off, letting go of the well wall and closing her eyes.
She seemed to fall for a long time this time, a lot longer than usual, before she found herself laying on the hard floor of the well, in, presumably, her own time. The air on this side was warm inside the well, but as she stood and pulled herself out she shuddered. Her eyes widened some. That was strange, she should have come back to warm spring weather . . not the dead of winter. Around her, snow lay everywhere, covering the leafless trees, the roof of the shrine, the ground. She gave a small squeal as, when she stepped into it, the snow raised above her socks.
Wow, it must have been a bad storm.
She wrapped her arms around herself as she trekked to her house, throwing open the door, stepping form the frigid air into the warmth of her home. The whole family was sitting around the table. Sota and mom and Grandpa, and they were all sipping tea. She smiled a bit when she saw and extra cup, steam climbing out of it, sitting at an empty seat. Mom liked to be ready, just in case she came home. She wondered how much tea and food went to waste on things like that. She shuddered one more time as she shut the door, setting her backpack by the door.
Her mother looked up at her with relief in her eyes, and Kagome realized something might be wrong. Sota looked older than he should . . . a good year older, and mom had a few extra wrinkles.
"Kagome!" Her mother jumped up, aat the same time as Sota, and grandpa just smiled serenely. Kagome looked surprised as he mother threw her arms around her, Sota hugging her as well, his arms arms around her ribs instead of her waist.
"I kept telling them you'd be back." Grandpa just continued to smile.
"What do you mean, kept telling them I'd be back? HOw long was I gone?" SHe looked form her mother to her grandfather.
"Almost a year and a half." It was her brother that answered as her mother picked up her cup of tea and offered it to her.
"You must be freezing!" She could see the lines of worry now that she was closer to her mother. She took the tea gladly stamping the already mostly melted snow from her feet as she sat down and began peeling her shoes and socks off, sipping the warm tea and letting it warm her.
"That can't be right! I was only with Inu Yasha for a few weeks." She knew, though, from looking around the table, that it had to be right. She shook her head and stood up. setting her empty cup down.
"I'm going to go take a shower." Her mother nodded and shooed her out.
"Yes, yes, you go get warm and rest, we can talk about it in a little while."
Kagome nodded, relieved. She needed some time to think. She had been right when she went to the well, somethign was wrong . . maybe with it.
Rubbing the back of her neck, she dropped her clothes and stepped into the shower, letting the warm water heat her body back up, closing her eyes and enjoying it . . and most of all, enjoying really washing her hair. Shampoo really was amazing.
When she was done she wrapped herself in a towel and curled up on her soft bed, closing her eyes. What could be wrong with the well, she thought. It had never transported her back so far from when she had left before. Closing her eyes, she felt her early morning wearing on her, and maybe something else, a heaviness in her stomach, and rolling over, she began to fall asleep, thinking of Inu Yasha and Miroku, Sango and Shippou and suddenly she felt very, very far away from them.
