Likes: Old poetry, Organic foods, Lyre music, talking to people, Flowers
Dislikes: Violence of any kind, cruelty, people who don’t respect nature
Strengths: Very powerful illusions
Weaknesses: physically vulnerable, cannot affect machines
Powers/Weapons:
Psionic Illusion casting: Ariel possesses the ability to telepathically manipulate the senses of those around her. She can override, edit, or inset information that alters the subject’s ability to perceive their environment. Her illusions can affect all human senses; visual, audio, olfactory, tactile, taste, balance, motion, Kinesthetic’s and temperature. She cannot alter a subject’s perception of time, nor their internal senses (such as making a person feel hungry or tired). She also has difficulty manipulating senses that are markedly different than normal humans.
Ariel’s illusions can cover an area of about five miles in radius, centered on her. She can choose who is or is not able to perceive her illusions, and to what extent they can. She is also able to project multiple, separate illusions, maintaining up to ten different active illusions at the same time, an active illusion being on which reacts to the environment in a believable manner. She can also maintain very large number passive illusions, which are typically simple constructs that follow a limited series of actions, like a movie, not reacting to changes in their surroundings. Doing so is virtually effortless. Maintaining multiple active illusions reduces her range proportionally. So by maintaining five separate illusions, her range is reduced to one mile.
Because her powers are psionic in nature, relying on telepathic contact, her powers cannot affect mechanical devices. Recording devices do not respond to her illusions, no do mechanical constructs.
Given that her powers affect a person on a subconscious level, it is very difficult to break through her illusions, even if you are aware that they aren’t real. Individuals with a very strong mental discipline can force themselves to reject her false sensations, allowing them to escape from the illusions. Characters with telepathic abilities can also try and overpower her effect with their own. Very strong external stimuli can temporarily break through an illusion, such as a very strong pain, though these only give a momentary break lasting a few seconds. Lastly, the use of substances which alter once perceptions can interfere with Arial’s illusions, though not totally dispel them.
Psionic hypnosis: A secondary power that functions through her illusions. While under the influence of her powers, people experience a hypnotic effect that works in concert with the illusion. The hypnotic state causes the individuals mind to fill in whatever details are missing from the illusion.
Other Abilities.
Medical Training: Ariel is a competent field medic, and knows how to apply first aid to a wide verity of injuries, even under combat conditions.
History: Germany, Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq…those we’re just the start. Wars spiraled out of control; alliances between nations grew tighter as they rallied together, each side of the conflict becoming more and more committed to winning, regardless of the cost. Years of war turned to decades, then to generations. The earth was scorched, the land made unusable for anything but more fighting. The Air was choked with smoke, the forests of the earth turned to ash, the seas made toxic. But neither side could stop, both we’re locked in an endless spiral of attack and retaliation. Winning didn’t even seem to be a goal anymore. The Fighting had become its own end.
With the fallout from countless bombings, mutant populations around the world increased dramatically. As many as one in a hundred people had mutant powers. Most we’re immeadiatly drafted into the service of whatever side got a hold of them. That, or tried to make their own faction, only to be stomped out by the other superpowers. Ariel’s life was like that of most children. Underground, always afraid of a bombing, or a raid. Seeing people march off to fight, or being dragged back to be stitched together. And Like all of the children, she was drafted into service, receiving medical training so that she could patch together the wounded and keep them in the field.
Ariel’s first trip to the surface was an experience she could never forget. She emerged from the bunker, seeing the blackened earth. Rubble from long abandoned buildings littered the ground, destroyed machines of war lay where they had fallen. The Sun shone dimly though the haze. The Air was thick and heavy, the heat unbearable. For days, her unit was marched accost the land, and every moment of it, every broken skeleton, scream of anguish from the dying, every shrill whine of shells flying through the air, was etched into her mind forever.
The unit was ambushed on the third day. They we’re wiped out before Ariel even knew what was happening. She was injured, captured, and put to work stitching up enemy units. It amazed her, how easily the transition from one side to the other was. Neither side seemed different to her. Scared, hungry, always fighting. A few weeks later, the camp she was being held at got caught in another battle. It all seemed so pointless, like a bad dream that never ended. She wanted it all to just end, all the senseless killing. Her Mutant power came to life in the midst of the chaos. Everyone present was drawn into an illusion, forced to stop fighting as their senses we’re ensnared. Everything was very quiet, and it was probably the first silence Ariel had ever experienced.
She went off on her own, making her way accost the land. That moment of peace, she knew that she could make others experience it, and maybe, if enough people could stop, the war could end and nobody would have to suffer anymore. With her gift of illusions, she could render entire legions of soldiers unable to lift a hand against one another, stopping battles and skirmishes before they could be started. Both sides wanted to capture her, to make her power into a weapon, but neither could manage to overcome her abilities, anyone sent after her would get snared in her power and be unable to find any sign of her presence.
