Appearance:
Name: Matthew Murdock
Alias or Code-name: Daredevil
Powers/Weapons:
Enhanced Senses - At an early age, Daredevil was involved in an accident in which radioactive chemicals completely blinded him. However, to compensate, his other senses were augmented to superhuman levels.
Sense of Touch - Daredevil's sense of touch is so acute that he can detect the impression ink makes on paper, allowing him to read via touch. He has the ability to know where people are around him, a sort of proximity alarm, just by detecting air disturbance and body heat. In regards to body heat, Daredevil can tell when people are blushing (as well as other bodily changes in temperature related to emotional stimuli), and how long a cadaver has been dead.
Sense of Smell - Murdock's sense of smell is acute enough as to be able to discern and remember a person's natural odor, despite attempts to conceal it, as well as track persons in a crowd from up to 50 feet away.
Sense of Taste - Daredevil can taste and determine the number of grains of salt on a pretzel, and distinguish individual ingredients in food.
Sense of Hearing - Because his ears are so sensitive, Daredevil can detect miniscule changes of pressure that would not phase normal individuals. Through his hearing, he is able to monitor his heartbeat and vital statistics, as well as being able to monitor the vitals of others.
"Radar Sense" - In addition to his other enhanced senses, mutations in Daredevil's brain cause his brain to emit a special form of electromagnetic energy. By "reading" the reverbations and echoes of this energy, Daredevil can mentally construct a 3-D layout of the environment, working akin to sight.
Physical Combat - Under the tutelage of Stick and his own training, Daredevil has attained near-peak human physical condition, possessing Olympic-level strength, speed, and endurance. Murdock has hybridized American boxing, ninjutsu, judo and aiki-jujutsu to create a new, personalized fighting style. To aid him, he has a specially-designed billy club, disguised as a cane. It contains 30 feet of aircraft control cable attached to a grappling hook, and can be split into a fighting baton and a curved hook.
Origin: Matthew Michael Murdock was raised by his father, ex-boxer "Battling Jack" Murdock, in Hell's Kitchen, New York, after having been abandoned by his mother. Murdock's father, however, raised his boy as best he could, instilling in Matt values of nonviolence and the need for education before anything else.
At a young age, Matt saved a blind man from being hit by a truck, but himself was blinded when the truck's cargo, a radioactive chemical, fell from the vehicle. However, the chemical mutated Matt and augmented his remaining senses well past the threshold of human ability. In order to support his now-blind son, Battling Jack returned to the boxing ring. Matthew stuck with school and went to Columbia, getting into the prestigious law school located there. Before he received his Juris Doctor, however, Jack Murdock was killed by employees of the Fixer for not throwing a fight.
The judicial system, which Matt had decided to throw his lot in with, did not convict the murderers of Jack Murdock, and so Matt took up his father's boxing robes and assumed the mantle of the Daredevil, the Man Without Fear. He assaulted his father's killers and frightened the Fixer to death. With his best friend, Franklin "Foggy" Nelson, he established a law firm in New York City; yet as Daredevil, he could operate outside the law, bringing super criminals to justice.
While at Columbia, Matt met and fell in love with Elektra Nachios, daughter of a Greek ambassador, who fled from both Matt and the world-at-large after her father was gunned down by police.
In the beginning, Daredevil fought mostly customed, themed criminals, including the Purple Man and Mister Fear. He moved to San Fransisco with Natasha Romanova, the Black Widow for a time, working for a different, less-principled law firm.
Upon his return to New York, he was pursued both by the world's deadliest, most accurate assassin, Bullseye, and his old flame, Elektra Nachios, who had fallen in with the Hand, a ninjutsu cult and been brainwashed. Technically, Elektra was killed by Bullseye, but Daredevil's love for her, combined with the inner "magic" of ninjutsu brought her back to life, after which she retreated to live with the Chaste, the more pure complement of the Hand that had turned her into a cold and violent killer.
Matt and Foggy's old secretary, Karen Page, had meanwhile moved to Hollywood to become an actress. And she did, yet not in the sense that she originally intended. She worked in pornographic film and eventually become addicted to black tar heroin. Karen was one of the only people to know of Matt Murdock's true identity, and she sold the information for money. This information reached very interested, very sensitive ears: those of Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of organized crime who had been pursuing both Spiderman and the Man Without Fear. Through his prodigious network of connections, Fisk was able to destroy everything that Murdock cared about. However, Matt took Karen back and attempted to rebuild his life, when the Kingpin sent another deadly weapon against Daredevil: Typhoid Mary. At one moment, sweet and unassuming. At another, a vastly psychic assassin who drove Matt Murdock to cheat on Karen and become a psychologically broken man.
After Matt's secret identity was discovered by a tabloid reporter, he was forced to fake the death of Matt Murdock, much to the detriment of his free law clinic. He was forced to live as street hustler Jack Batlin, adopting seedier tactics more in line with those of Daredevil's rival, the Punisher. In fact, Daredevil teamed up with Spider-Man and Wolverine to take down the Punisher. Matt's life with Karen would end, however, when she was killed by Bullseye.
Daredevil was pitted against one of the most prominent members of Spider-Man's gallery of rogues, Mysterio, when the villain discovered he had a terminal, inoperable cancer. Convinced of his inability to beat Spider-Man, he instead attempted a "final performance" in trying to take down Daredevil, but was unable to and shamed the villain into suicide.
The Kingpin did not rest easily, however, and sent deaf woman Maya Lopez, able to recreate any physical motion she sees, after Daredevil, knowing he'd be lonely after Karen's death. Fisk tricked Maya into thinking Daredevil had killed her father, prompting her to create the identity of Echo and pursue him.
