The NPC is Mimic
Calvin Rankin, the son of a scientist, experimented on himself using his father's machines. He learned he could duplicate the superhuman powers of others.
He called himself the Mimic, encountering the X-Men. Duplicating their powers, he was made a member of the team. However, after Super Adaptoid disabled his powers he left the X-Men.
Calvin was rendered comatose in a battle with Hulk. He recovered by duplicating the healing factor of Wolverine.
Mimic began experiencing problems with his powers, as those he duplicated were being weakened. He relocated to a small research station in Siberia. X-Force responded to a distress call at the station and found him apparently mad. He blamed X-Force for the deaths of other researchers. He mysteriously disappeared after causing an explosion with Sunspot's powers.
Members of X-Force later encountered both Mimic and Blob, who claimed they were servants of Onslaught.
Mimic was captured by Operation Zero Tolerance. He retained Professor X's telepathic signature, which was detected by Excalibur. They traveled to his location hoping to find Xavier, but freed Rankin instead.
Mimic later joined Mystique's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and assisted in freeing the real Xavier. That group disbanded and he was not among later groupings.
When last seen, Mimic had lost his templated powers due to the High Evolutionary's use of a device that halted the use of all mutant powers. Since that device was halted and mutants regained their powers, it is assumed Mimic did as well.
Aside from his ability to copy the superpowers of nearby people, the Mimic permanently possesses the powers of the original five X-Men: Angel, The Beast, Cyclops, Iceman and Marvel Girl, but if he replaces one of those powers with something new they will be lost once more. Thus, he has the powers of flight (granted by angelic wings), increased strength and agility, optic blasts, temperature manipulation, and telekinesis. He partly retains Professor X's telepathic powers, which causes his telepathic signature to be mistaken for that of Charles Xavier in Excalibur #123, although he is not shown to be uncovered during recent searches for Xavier.
Powers/Abilities:
Mimic constantly emits invisible, psionic waves that perform a full-spectrum genetic scan on anyone within a 10 foot radius of him, allowing him to imprint the personal enhancements of up to five other superhumans/mutants onto his genetic code at half-potency and retain them until the person he mimicked the power from is over a mile away. To gain new powers, he must choose a power he currently has to 'drop' to make room for the new one. Being exposed to powers over extremely long periods of time allows Mimic to permanently retain the power, no matter how far the distance of the other person. He could, of course, still drop those powers if he so wished.
These abilities were supposedly enhanced by Onslaught when Rankin and Blob encountered X-Force.
He permanently gained the ability to use the powers of the original X-Men and Charles Xavier:
Angel's wings
Beast's physiology including enhanced strength and agility
Cyclops' optic blasts
Iceman's ability to create ice
Marvel Girl's telekinesis
Professor X's telepathy
When interacting with normal humans, Mimic will imitate their skills, personality traits, and intelligence. Thus, when in the vicinity of athletes, he gains superior athletic ability. Also, when in the presence of a scholar, not only does his knowledge expand, but so does his potential to learn (I.Q., E.Q. etc...)
