First name: Simon
Last Name: Williams
Alias: Wonder Man
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 190#
Hair: Dark brown
Eyes: Red
Persuasion: Good
Powers: Wonder Man is a being wholly composed of ionic energy. His powers include:
Strength: Wonder Man is one of the strongest beings on Earth. His power is most often compared to that of Thor.
Flight: Wonder Man can fly. He originally required a jet pack to accomplish this feat, but now can simply fly on his own steam.
Invulnerability: It is extremely difficult to hurt Wonder Man, and it might be impossible to kill him, judging from the number of times he has returned from death.
Life Support: As a being of pure energy, Wonder Man does not need to breath, eat, drink, sleep, or any other bodily functions usually associated with beings of flesh and blood. He does not age, and is so immortal.
Reflexes: Wonder Man's reflexes can be best described as instantaneous.
Wonder Man has had limited hand-to-hand training with Captain America, but in truth was not very dedicated to the work. He is thus for the most part without technique in his fighting skills.
History:
Wonder Man's story is primarily that of a man with a very malleable personality eventually discovering himself. In the process, he became one of the most powerful heroes on Earth.
Simon Williams was the second son of Industrialist Sanford Williams. On the death of his father, Simon inherited the family business. Unfortunately for Simon, the business was listing badly due to fierce competition from competitor Stark Enterprises. Simon had some corporate training but had neither the intellect or fortitude to head off a threat by the incomparable Tony Stark.
Simon, not having a strong personality in his own right, allowed himself to be led down a primrose path by his brother Eric. This was the first of a number of occasions where Simon would be led astray by a stronger, more forceful personality. Eric convinced his brother to attempt to embezzle funds from the company, so that if and when it should go under they at least would be secure. Not being an accomplished white-collar criminal, Simon is quickly found out, tried, and incarcerated.
In prison, Simon is approached by agents of Baron Zemo, who again use flattery and strong persuasion to convince Simon that his ills were all the fault of Tony Stark. Once he is sufficiently enraged and indoctrinated, Simon is offered a chance for revenge if he will serve Zemo. He agrees, and is freed from prison by Zemo, working with Asgardians the Enchantress and the Executioner, and brought to Zemo's secret jungle laboratory.
Zemo bombards the willing Williams with ionic energy, hoping to transform his dupe into a being strong enough to overcome any one of the Avengers. His process works better then he had ever dreamed, creating in Williams a powerhouse the equal of the Asgardian Thor in sheer strength and invulnerability.
Zemo's plan is for Simon Williams to become a superhero and infiltrate the Avengers. Then, at a critical moment, he is to betray them, providing victory for Zemo over his hated enemy Captain America and his allies. The Baron provides Simon with a gaudy costume and corny name, Wonder man, and arranges for his new hero to meet up with and assist the Avengers.
The plan functions perfectly and Simon is accepted into the Avengers. He plays his part, leading the team to Zemo's lair, and at the proscribed moment turns on them and begins to win the battle for Zemo. However, at the last moment, Simon has a change of heart.
Zemo had included a safety valve in the process when he created Wonder Man. Simon was slowly dying from the first moment he got off the laboratory slab, and only regular treatments by Zemo would prolong his life. Simon had told the Avengers he was dying slowly (though not why) and had been amazed and touched when they all went to work trying to find a cure.
Thus, at the last moment, Simon Williams discovered, with no small amount of surprise to himself, that he was not the rudderless boat that he had always felt he was. He made a stand for what was good and right, at the cost of his own life. Wonder Man helped defeat Zemo and the Asgardians, and shortly thereafter died from going too long without a treatment from Zemo.
Even after his death, Iron Man was determined to salvage something of the valiant Wonder Man, and recorded his brain function/pattern before it ended. This recorded brain information was later used by Ultron to create the synthezoid Vision.
Just like Simon was a better man then he had ever thought he was, his Wonder Man powers were far greater then Zemo had intended or understood. He had not in truth died from Zemo's trap, his mind had simply shut down to complete the transformation that had begun on the laboratory table.
Eric Williams, distraught over Simon's death, becomes the villainous Grim Reaper and attempts many times to take his revenge on the Avengers.
Wonder Man eventually recovers and takes his place again as an Avenger. Unfortunately he is used again and again as a pawn against his friends, most frequently by his evil brother. He is also used by such villains as Kang, the Black Talon and the Living Laser. In most of these occasions he either dies and is enslaved as a zombie-like creature or seems to perish at the end. In all cases his ionic-powered body eventually brings him back to full-strength.
Simon does a stint in LA with the West Coast Avengers and begins a side-career as an actor and a stunt-man. He has limited acting skills due to his somewhat insecure personality, but he manages to get some reasonable roles, mostly through the intercession of friend and teammate Hercules and his connections in Tinseltown. After this team disbands Simon joins its successor Force Works.
Simon has romantic relations with the Scarlet Witch, which lead
him into conflict with the Vision. This eventually ends during the Kang Dynasty saga when both realize that she will always love the Vision first and foremost.
Wonder Man is now a super-hero working on his own in LA. His part-time acting career also continues but it is obvious even to him that Simon Williams will never be DiCaprio. His roles come to him mainly due to the notoriety of the Wonder Man 'brand'. He also gets roles in action flicks that involve danger, since the studio saves money on safeguards. Simon cannot be hurt, so the studio can film difficult and dangerous scenes without fear of bodily harm or litigation when using the willing Avenger.
Simon likes the lifestyle and recognition he gets in Tinseltown, and is now considered the resident hero of Hollywood. Simon misses the camaraderie of the Avengers however, and is hoping that the team will re-form, as it has done time and again.
Wonder Man once considered forming a new version of the Avengers on his own, but he gave up that idea shortly after he had it. He knows well that Simon Williams will never be a leader of men or a forceful personality, and has come to terms with this fact. He is who he is, and that is sufficient. Nonetheless, Simon does continues on occasion to accuse friends and allies of thinking he is stupid, gullible, or not 'up to the challenge'. These accusations are, of course, more reflections of his own doubts and insecurities about himself then the feelings of his associates.
